The Compass Team will read the title and roll their eyes. I don't know how many times they heard me say this about the future of Compass. Most of the time I believed it. Once in a while I was maybe talking myself into it!
It seems we tend to focus on the past or the future. My experience is that both can lead to potential problems. If we get stuck in the past, we run the risk of being irrelevant in the present. Living in the future could lead to issues as well.
I always liked Tony Campolo's quote, "Our past is important, but it is not nearly as important to our present as the way we see our future."
This quote seems to put the three tenses of time into proper perspective. Just the right emphasis on the past, present and future. A good example is from some recent time with the little people in my life (grandkids) that gives the quote rich meaning. Seeing the wonder and creativity in their eyes has to change the way I see the future and impacts the choices I make in the present moment.
Financially, it is a good habit to believe the best is yet to be! We are all so blessed and most are interested in "paying it forward." The dollars and investment of time we leave behind gets me all excited about the future as well. At a previous Compass location we had this quote on the wall:
"Generosity is planting an oak tree when you're 85."
So true, a statement about the future that informs and shapes the present.
